Alan is the third generation of the Irish diaspora of the 1930s. He was raised in North London and embarked upon his academic career under the late Charles Swann of the American Studies Department at the University of Keele.
Five year’s work in the UK advertising industry then led to his Diploma at the London Film School followed quickly by his PGCE at the Department of Education, the University of Oxford.
1991-2009
Once armed with academic and vocational credentials, he has been employed as teacher, lecturer, curriculum manager and university Guest Lecturer in the UK – Oxford & Cherwell Valley College; Bulgaria – Dept of Mass Communication, New Bulgarian University of Sofia , & Germany – The Smeinar für Filmwissenschaft, the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.
Since 2005 he has authored “We, the media…” (p. 418); edited “Healthywords” (p. 187) and completed “Jacobean Visions“, (p. 201) as based on earlier MA research undertaken at the Institute of Education, University of London. The book is an interdisciplinary study in theatre, film and new media culture.
2007-2009 University Teaching & Research
For 2007, 2008, 2009 Alan was appointed as Guest Lecturer in Film Studies at the Institute of North American Studies, Freie Universtiy of Berlin, where he teaches on the MA ‘Kultur’ programme as led by Uni. Prof. Dr. Winfried Fluck.
As of Autumn 2009 Alan is Professor at The Film Programme (formally the pretoria Film School) of the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa.
When not teaching and writing, Alan is practically involved in a range of related activities in media education, screenwriting and independent film development.
